What's a good salary in Vietnam?
What you think is a good salary in Europe or the USA, over three or four thousand dollars would give you in Vietnam the lifestyle of a millionaire.
To establish what is a comfortable salary in Vietnam, one need to consider the cost of living there.
Of course the amounts below are for apparatments and a lifestyle that will suit western standards. We are not talking here about living like Vietnamese with one soup in the morning and one bowl of rice in the evening or sleeping on the floor because it is fresher when you don't have air conditioning.
Accomodation:
Monthly cost (rent) of a two bedroom flat furnished in the center of Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi: usd 800. And that's a nice one.
For that kind of money you may even find a nice villa slightly outside the center.
Accomodation in Vietnam is relatively expensive as the real estate market is completely over priced.
Cost of transportation:
You cannot rent a car in Vietnam, unless you also rent a driver. This would cost around usd 500 but you will most certainly be better off driving a moped like everyone else.
A proper scooter (Vespa) costs usd 1000. This is the price for a second hand top of the shelf motorbike.
Taking a taxi is very affordable, it costs around 5 usd to go from one side of the city to the other. Around 250 dollars per month will get you everywhere you need to go.
Food and recreation:
That's the best part of living in Vietnam, a lunch in a great restaurant costs maximum ten dollars. A beer only costs 2 dollars and a night out will cost you 20 dollars tops.
Budget for food and recreation for a month: 400 dollars.
Conclusion:
As you can see, you can have a wonderful lifestyle in Vietnam with a salary from 1500 dollars per month. Therefore you should consider any salary above that amount to be acceptable as it will allow you to enjoy the best Vietnam has to offer.
Note: Obviously if you are working in the US for a company which is operating in Vietnam and manage to get your boss to send you over there, while keeping your current US package, then you will have the time of your life.
